Puerto Rico has made some tremendous strides in solar energy exploitation in the last couple of years. Currently, the Island targets to attain 40% renewable energy by 2025 and 100% by 2050. Like most territories in the Caribbean Islands, Puerto Rico struggles to provide constant electricity via conventional sources.
Some climate activists are claiming that Puerto Rico should rely on solar and wind energy to power its grid. And in 2019, Puerto Rico passed a law that requires 40 percent of its electricity to be coming from renewables by 2025 and 60 percent by 2040.
In 2017, Puerto Rico had an installed solar capacity of 127 Megawatts at the utility-scale and 88 Megawatts at the small-scale. In February 2021, Puerto Rico’s electric power authority requested proposals to generate 1 Gigawatt of renewable energy capacity, revealing that the Puerto Rican solar market is poised for further growth.
Electricity in Puerto Rico is not only bad, but also expensive and dirty. Outages are routine, and the island currently relies on fossil fuels to generate 97 percent of its electricity. Even without natural disasters, Puerto Rico experiences power issues.
Overall, roughly 117,000 homes and businesses on the island currently have solar rooftops. More than 60% of energy in Puerto Rico is generated by petroleum-fired power plants, 24% by natural gas, 8% by coal and 7% by renewables, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
