At this point, it''s proposed that the Battery Breakthrough Initiative will kick off supporting the production of: active materials, cathodes, anodes and flow battery electrolytes; the manufacture of any type of electrochemical battery cell 1. battery pack assemblies, which includes incorporating battery management systems (BMS).

Consultation is now open, with submissions due by 10am, Monday 7 October 2024. ARENA is aiming to launch the Program by late 2024 or early 2025. ARENA will deliver the Battery Breakthrough Initiative, which is aligned with the Economic Resilience and Security stream of the Future Made in Australia (FMA) policy agenda.

More information on these consultation webinars can be found on the Battery Breakthrough webpage. Following the conclusion of the consultation period and finalisation of the Program Guidelines, it is anticipated that the Program will open in late 2024 or early 2025. The timeline set out below is indicative only and subject to change.
Funding for the Strategy was included in last weekβs Budget: $523.2 million for the Battery Breakthrough Initiative, administered by ARENA, to promote the development of battery manufacturing capabilities through production incentives targeted at the highest value opportunities in the supply chain.
ARENA CEO Darren Miller said batteries are a crucial enabler of Australiaβs emissions reduction goals. βEnergy storage technology is absolutely critical for our renewable energy future. We know that solar and wind energy can provide us the lowest cost renewable energy at scale, but we also need to be able to store it for when it is needed.
