For centuries, life on Hestur, a small Faroese island located halfway between Scotland and Iceland in the northeast Atlantic, was isolated: Streymoy, the biggest of the 18 islands that comprise the Faroe Islands, is almost ironically close, within eyeshot, but powerful currents in the fjord dividing the two islands long made travel between them difficult.
The Faroe Islands, home to just over 50,000 people, are an autonomous territory of Denmark located halfway between Shetland and Iceland. The Islands aim to achieve a target of net zero energy generation by 2030. The two partners hope to reach 70 MW installed capacity. The project leader at SEV believes that tidal technology can be a valuable player in reaching the goal of 100 % renewable energy. On the Faroe Islands, wind energy is also considered as a central energy source to reach the goal of 100 % renewable energy onshore on the islands in 2030.
The Faroe Islands, like all other countries in this part of the world, are undergoing a green transition in energy production and energy use. Formally, the process began with a unanimous decision in the Faroese parliament in 2009, which committed the future governors to an energy policy that by 2020 would reduce total CO2-emissions by 20%

Energy in the Faroe Islands is produced primarily from imported fossil fuels, with further contributions from hydro and wind power. Oil products are the main energy source, mainly consumed by fishing vessels and sea transport. Electricity is produced by oil, hydropower and wind farms, mainly by SEV, which is owned by all the municipalities of the Faroe Islands. [1]

“In the Faroe Islands, we are blessed with renewables: we have wind, hydro and some sun in the summer; we also have tidal and wave power where we can see great potential,” says Nielsen. Since announcing its green vision in 2014, SEV has already done a lot to increase the share of renewables in its energy mix.
“The energy system in the Faroe Islands is an impressive example of how all available energy resources can be integrated into a smart and innovative microgrid,” says Vehkakoski.
Even more conservative scenarios predict that the Faroe Islands’ current electricity consumption of approximately 350,000 MWh per year will increase to approximately 450,000 MWh in 2025. “The current discussion recommends using more green energy and especially the potential for wind energy is quite high,” says one of the islanders.
Nielsen is Head of R&D at Elfelagið SEV, the publicly-owned, primary power-producer on the islands, and he has a clear vision: “Our future energy supply in the Faroes is green. We have set a goal of becoming 100% green by 2030 in terms of on-shore electricity.”
Fishing is, and has been for many decades, the main industry in the Faroe Islands with its products, including farmed salmon, representing more than 95% of total exports, and around 20% of Faroese GDP. “Producing fish meal and oil requires quite a lot of energy.
Far from continental Europe and surrounded by a vast sea, the Faroe Islands lie in the middle of the North Atlantic between Iceland and Norway.
