Our results show that thermal energy storage is the most favourable storage option, due to lower investment costs than battery energy storage systems. Furthermore, we find that optimising the storage sizes for the whole energy community leads to both cost reduction for the energy community and a reduction in maximum import for the local grid.
Investors may look toward battery storage solutions with differing investment theses. For example, energy storage systems are seen by some investors as a potential solution to reduce some of the pressure data centers and other load growth are placing, and are expected to place, on transmission and distribution networks.
The multi-billion-dollar Energy storage industry is expected to grow from around $22B in 2023 to about $134B by 2031, with a projected CAGR of 22.1% over this period. While oil, coal, and natural gas still dominate the global energy sourcing in terms of terawatt-hour yield, renewables are rapidly expanding with over twice the investment size of fossil fuels. Key
Due to the wide array of energy technologies, market niches, and data availability issues, this market report only includes a select group of technologies. For example, thermal energy storage technologies are very broadly defined and cover a wide range of potential markets, technology readiness levels, and primary energy sources.
