As mentioned above, there have been two major barriers, or stumbling blocks, to the business case for energy storage in the Netherlands to date. As of the beginning of 2022, one of those has been eliminated, to the great relief of GIGA Storage and others in the industry.
Energy storage means that energy is stored when the price for energy is low (so when demand is low or supply is high). The energy stored is kept for times when the price is high (when demand is high or supply is limited).
Furthermore, Energie-Nederland argues for sensible policy instruments around energy storage. For instance, the main barrier to investment in electricity storage is the tariff for the use of the electricity grid. Market participants who store energy now pay the same grid charges as consumers.
Different technologies, such as batteries and pumped storage, are used for energy storage at different scales. Energy storage improves the reliability and resilience of the energy system, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and enables the integration of renewable energy. However, there are challenges, such as high costs and regulatory barriers.
