Battery storage got a black eye this week when a 300 MW unit at Moss Landing in California caught fire in spectacular fashion.
Let''s catch up on what happened in this fire, what the lingering concerns are, and what comes next for the energy storage industry.
Australia''s top electricity and gas retailer Origin Energy said its green transition was proving slower and more costly than expected, while flagging its coal plant could run beyond 2027.
3 天之前· UK energy storage company Zenobe today said it has acquired a 400-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Cumbria, North West England, from its developer Innova.
However, intermittency of solar and wind power output has given rise to big demands for energy storage solutions such as pumped hydro-electric stations, batteries, flywheel and compressed-air...
The Gateway and Moss Landing projects are just two of the battery energy storage installations being developed across California, a state that has ramped up its use of renewable energy in recent years while phasing out electricity from coal, nuclear, and natural gas-fired power plants.
Potentia Energy, a joint venture co-owned by Enel Green Power and INPEX, has secured the first environmental approval for a grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) under South Australia''s new Hydrogen and Renewable Energy (HRE) Act.

The fire that started Thursday at the Vistra Energy battery plant in Moss Landing, roughly 80 miles (about 130 kilometers) south of San Francisco, led to 1,700 people evacuating, closed part of Highway 1 and generated huge flames and significant amounts of smoke. The cause is under investigation.
Let''s face it – the energy storage industry''s been riding a wild rollercoaster since 2022. After breaking growth records like Olympic sprinters, 2025 finds many companies catching their breath. But this isn''t "game over" – it''s halftime
One reason is that many newer sites use a different chemistry that’s considered safer. Newer energy storage facilities also tend to isolate batteries better, so small fires won’t spread as dramatically as they did in this case. There’s still a lot we don’t know about this fire, particularly when it comes to how it started.

Last year California had more than 11 gigawatts of utility-scale storage on the grid. Part of California’s motivation to act stems from electricity shortages. In 2020 the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) ordered rotating outages because the grid was overwhelmed with demand during a heat wave.
But all forms of energy storage and generation have risk, he said. The situation is similar to battery fires in electric cars which happen much less frequently than gasoline fires. In fact, gasoline fires are so common the media seldom report them while they cover battery fires excessively.
The safety features and design of the battery storage facility proposed for South County are different from the Moss Landing battery facility, said Max Christian, project lead for New Leaf Energy. The batteries will be stored in steel containers that will have heat monitoring and fire suppression systems, he said.
