Pitcairn’s authorities have launched a renewable energy project designed to replace fossil fuels with solar energy.
Although there is little evidence of an eroding coastline at Pitcairn, there is an increase in the risk of soil run-off from the island after heavy rainstorms. This risk comes from two main sources: earthen roads and open areas of bare soil lacking vegetation, which are caused by landslips after heavy rainfall.
The Pitcairn Islands are located in the central South Pacific, almost exactly midway between New Zealand and Peru. They are positioned between longitudes 131° and 124°W and latitudes 23° and 26°S. Access is by sea only.
Pitcairn Island has a distinct absence of shallow water reefs (< 12 m depth). In places, large volcanic boulders are topped by brown foliose macroalgae, particularly Lobophora variegata and Sargassum obtusifolium (Sala et al., 2012 ).
