Let''s face it: Zambia isn''t just about breathtaking Victoria Falls anymore. With its energy storage investment market projected to grow by 18% annually through 2028 (thanks to juicy solar potential and mining sector demands), this Southern African gem is becoming a hotspot for savvy investors.
The penetration rate of off-grid photovoltaic systems is only 8%, and insufficient energy storage has resulted in more than 30% of photovoltaic power generation being wasted.
5 天之前· The summit emphasised the strategic role of the C&I sector in Zambia''s energy future, focusing on grid modernisation with storage and hybrid systems, private-led generation, and regional power trading. It also highlighted opportunities in renewables, embedded storage, energy efficiency, and clean industrial processes.
This infrastructure will also place Zambia at the center of renewable energy trading across southern Africa and allow energy traders to buy renewable energy from anywhere in the region, store it in Zambia, and then sell it to any customer that is connected to the Southern Africa Power Pool.
As the market is still in its infancy, there is great potential for development in this renewable resource-rich country, particularly for German and European companies offering climate-friendly energy solutions with expertise in renewable energy and energy storage.
This is USTDA''''s second battery energy storage project in Zambia, following a feasibility study and pilot project in Zambia''''s Sesheke District signed earlier this year, according to the statement.

Zambia has 2,800 MW of installed electricity generation capacity, of which 83 percent is from hydro, nine percent from coal, five percent from heavy fuel oil, and three percent from solar. The mining sector is the country’s largest power consumer, using 51 percent of total generated electricity, followed by the domestic sector at 33 percent.
Private companies also trade in electricity in Zambia. The largest of these, Copperbelt Energy Corporation Plc (CEC), buys electricity primarily from ZESCO and sells it to the various mines in the Copperbelt Province. It also operates its own generators, most of which run on fossil fuels.
Electricity imports and exports in GWh (first half of 2022) As mentioned in the previous chapter, Zambia has developed into an export powerhouse in recent years. This is also demonstrated by the data from the first half of 2022.
Zambia’s electricity market is structured as a single-buyer market, with ZESCO acting as the sole off-taker and bulk retailer of electricity through the national grid.
Zambia’s installed solar capacity is 89 MW. Zambia has two utility scale solar power plants: French company, Neoen, and U.S. company, First Solar, own and operate the 47.5 MW Bangweulu Solar Power Station in Lusaka, of which the Zambian government holds a 20 percent stake through its Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).
