LONDON (AP) — The British government said Wednesday it still plans to hand over a contested Indian Ocean archipelago, which is home to a strategically important military base, to Mauritius, after that country’s new leader backed away from the contentious deal. However, since its creation, the British Indian Ocean Territory and the joint UK-US military base on Diego Garcia has had a contested existence. It has been challenged through various international courts and tribunals, threatening the long-term, secure operation of the base. In recent years, this threat had risen significantly.
The BIOT is one of 14 British Overseas Territories. Located in the Indian Ocean, it is made up of the Chagos Archipelago of islands, including the biggest island, Diego Garcia, the site of a joint US-UK military base.
