When it comes to breaking records, China spares no effort. The Fengning plant not only claims the title of the largest pumped-storage hydropower plant in the world but also achieves four distinct records: installed capacity, storage capability, underground facility size, and cavern network scale.
China''s journey in pumped storage began with its first facility in 1968. By the end of 2020, it surged to the front of the global market, boasting the highest capacity both in operation and under construction.
Despite entering the pumped storage development arena relatively late, China has become a global leader in the sector through more than half a century of dedicated efforts, experts said.
Currently, there are four under construction VSPS power stations in China (Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station Phase II, Taian Pumped Storage Power Station Phase II, Langjiang Pumped Storage Power Station, and Zhongdong Pumped Storage Power Station), all utilizing doubly fed variable-speed units.
3 天之前· China is ramping up pumped-storage hydroelectricity (PSH) capacity in an effort to boost new energy development and ensure stable operations of the grid, according to a recent industry report.
POWERCHINA has been engaged in the design and construction of pumped storage hydropower (PSH) for more than 60 years and has participated in the construction of more than 90% of PSH stations in China.
The industry believes that pumped storage power stations highlight the value of power supply assurance and energy transformation, and have great potential for future development. However, we must also pay attention to the fact that some local plans far exceed the reasonable scale of local needs.
Acting as a sustainable giant energy storage system, the Jinzhai pumped-storage station will save up to 120,000 tons of coal and reduce 240,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year
Through a clear planning process and suitable reward for investment, China has put in place a complete system for bringing forward the PSH capacity it has determined is necessary.
Over more than fifty years of effort, China has progressed in conventional pumped storage technology, from introduction and assimilation to innovation.
With China continuously scaling up the construction of integrated clean energy bases like “hydro-wind-storage” and new energy bases such as “Shagohuang”, pumped storage stations, especially variable-speed ones, will be more widely applied as energy storage support in regional grids (China Power, 2023).
It is expected that the pumped storage hydropower station will directly invest approximately 1.7 trillion yuan in the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, with a clear economic stimulus effect (China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute, 2022).
Currently, China has built pumped storage installed capacity of 50 million kilowatts, ranking first in the world.
The report, Development Report of Pumped Storage Industry 2021, was published by the China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute on Friday. The total installed capacity of PSH in China increased 15.6 percent year-on-year to 36.39 million kW by the end of 2021, ranking tops in the world, the report said.
As of the end of 2020, the share of pumped storage and gas-fired power plants in their power systems is shown in Table 4. From the table, it can be observed that the proportion of regulation power sources in these countries exceeds 10 %, with Italy exceeding 50 %. The lowest share of pumped storage power generation is 2 %.
