People often share pictures of piles of used turbine blades or panels. But they don’t show massive heaps of coal ash that are generated elsewhere.
Between 2016 and 2050, solar waste generation would amount to 54 to 160 million tonnes: less than one-tenth of e-waste streams, and at least 99.6% less than coal ash and municipal waste. This is important context given mounting fears about huge quantities of dumped panels.
Other components of a solar power system may include inverters, racking, and battery backup systems, which may also be recycled. Inverters may be able to be recycled with electronic waste, and racking may be recycled with similar scrap metals. Battery-based grid energy storage systems may be handled with current battery recycling programs.
Comprehensive strategies are needed to minimize solar waste, promote recycling and reuse, and ensure the long-term sustainability of solar energy in India. Solar panels have many critical parts, all essential for using the sun’s energy. The main part is the photovoltaic cells. They use materials like silicon to change sunlight into electricity.
Despite the growing volume of solar panel waste, recycling rates remain abysmally low. According to a Yale Environment 360 report, only around 10% of solar panels are currently being recycled in both the United States and the European Union.
