In this study, we look explicitly at the value—and challenges—involved with building a hybrid wind-hydrogen system in one of the Faroe Islands, Mykines. Mykines is currently powered by diesel generators and the island is furthermore isolated from the main grid.
The Faroe Islands is located in Northern Europe in the North Atlantic Ocean, between Iceland, the United Kingdom and Norway. The country has about 50,000 inhabitants, and produces 261 million kWh annually where as 65% is based on fossil fuels . At an area size of 1393 km 2, equal to eight times the size of Washington DC .
