The Earystane location is one of the best sites in the Isle of Man in terms of generating electricity from wind with anticipated wind speeds in excess of 10m/s. This would mean that a windfarm at the site could potentially deliver more than one quarter of the Island’s annual demand.
It also recommended that the Isle of Man Government should commit to a 20MW onshore windfarm to meet its 2026 Target with smaller scale solar projects delivered through a Framework Approach across public buildings. Bird & Bird highlighted that it would be necessary to utilise the onshore wind sites already identified to meet the 2026 Target.
In January 2023, the Council of Ministers supported Manx Utilities’ proposals to progress actions to deliver onshore renewable generation via onshore wind. These objectives are also outlined in the Isle of Man Government Island Plan, Energy Strategy, and support the requirements of the Climate Plan 2022-2027.
Wind speeds must be >6 m/s to ensure the windfarm is commercially viable. Typically on the Isle of Man these are all upland areas. Wind turbines must be located a minimum of 500m from the nearest property in line with Technical Advice Note 8 (TAN 8) (England & Wales) to mitigate noise impact.
Based on an Island wide audit and feasibility assessments undertaken by specialist consultants Wardell Armstrong, this site appears to offer the best value to the electricity consumers of the Isle of Man with the lowest environmental impact when compared to the other option sites.
